The scalar field is just an excuse to forge in variables to fit cosmological observation. As observations take a hike in spectral analysis new attributes are assimilated by carbon based life and new properties must be adhered too by the current set of equations. So new fixes come along and so it goes on till such a point that basically you have produced a new book that looks and reads nothing like the last. Maybe we need to go back to the routes of neurological processes and try to see the sunlight lighting up our dreams rather than the moon of dusk and peril. As new processes are extrapolated from old data new rainbows can be seen on the horizon and new equations can be set in the preverbial stone as the light like a bulb causes a visualisation not seen since Einstein. Then and only then can the truth be grasped and cause the book covers to be opened with a satisfaction like no other and a realisation that what it contains is fact. Then the ghosts will be vanquished and the material will be like the cloth of the ages and beyond, as forever be in past, present and future.
